Students often struggle to interpret assignments and often will not raise their hand in class or venture to your office to ask questions for fear of looking stupid. However, students are not stupid, and they generally want to give you what you ask for. But are you clearly asking for what you want?
Writing a clear assignment description is essentially a technical writing task. Taking a technical writing approach to writing and formatting an assignment description can increase the clarity of your expectations and help improve students' ability to meet your assignment criteria. Participants in this workshop are encouraged to bring an assignment students have struggled to understand. Time permitting, we will workshop part or all of an assignment.
